It's that time again....

So, for the two of you who are still reading this...I know I have not posted in awhile, but I have either been attending a funeral or being stuck at home with a type of the flu!! NO FUN!!! No fun at all...especially when I left my mom the day before I got sick, and have had to be at home by myself for the last 4 days! Hopefully I will be able to get out tomorrow...I am going stir crazy in here!!

Anyway, today is Ash Wednesday and the beginning of Lent. My college minister at Broadway challenged us last year to give up something for the 40 (literally 47) days leading up to Easter, and so I decided to give up sweets for the time. Now there are two mistakes that I made: a) It was Girl Scout cookie season, and I had ordered some of those wonderful Thin Mint cookies, and when you freeze them...oh my, they are heavenly...and anyway, I decided to finish the rest of the box off the day before Lent began...NOT something I would recommend doing!! It was WAY hard to go cold turkey. b) I gave up EVERYthing sweet...which included yogurt, sweet cereals...you name it, I didn't have it for 47 days-my birthday even came and went and I did not have my birthday cake till Easter! Luckily, Easter happens to land on my birthday this year, so it all works out! :-)

All that to say, it was incredibly challenging but completely worth it. I am not what you would call an incredibly disciplined person, but going through the time of Lent really taught me to be disciplined and to rely on God. It was amazing, because although the first few weeks were rough, and I was tempted more than once, I never had a real urge to give in, and that surprised me. I know that it also helped because there were many of us who had given up something together, and we were going through it as a community, as a family...and that was incredibly encouraging. I hope that happens again this year-I have challenged my Mentor group to participate with me, and I sure hope they do and we can encourage each other to rely more on God. I pray too, that you might choose to join me as we focus our minds, hearts, and desires on God and His role and will in our lives!!

What up home spice!! I hope that you are feeling better. And I must say that I feel your pain about the whole Lent thing. One year I made it all the way to St. Patricks Day without eating a cookie before I fell off the wagon. This year however I'm giving up "that-which-must-not-be-named" (and no i'm not talking about Lord Voldemort from Harry Potter). Thanks to one of your beautiful roomies i almost fell of the wagon last night. Here's to keeping each other accountable, and keeping me away from fashion magazines!
