Mirror, mirror...

So, tell me if you have ever thought about this...

What if there were absolutely NO mirrors in this world, and the ONLY perception we had of how we looked came from others? Can you imagine how this world would be? Would it be any different? Do we not do that anyways-base our perception on how others look at us?

"The Lord does not look at the things man looks at. Man looks at the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart".
~I Samuel 16:7b

I wonder if there would be less makeup vendors, plastic surgeons, hair stylists, etc...or not? Would anything be different? Or would we probably still feel the same way and judge in the same manner...What do y'all think?

Great insight, and of course you're suggestion is right on... There would be much change in our lifestyle and even economy, since so much of it is based on how we look, according to our own point of view.

This reminds me of an Oprah episode I once watched. People were obsessed with looking in the mirror, so for like one week, all mirrors were covered up or taken out of their house. It made me think about how often I look in the mirror. There's a mirror right next to the door in the church office, everytime I walked in or out of that door, I had to take a quick look at myself to make sure I looked OK, pretty sad.

Mirrors aren't the problem. That is, self-reflection isn't the problem, it's just the need to be better at unnecessary things. In fact, self-reflection is a positive thing when used correctly, likewise a mirror can be affirming in a healthy way. Don't you want to see God's creation? We would still have others letting us know how we looked, and thus doing whatever we could to improve that. Making it intangible won't change anything. For example, the very wealthy could never use all of their money, it is the definition of nothing (as image would be to us without mirrors), but they still build up more and more wealth. Besides, I assume no mirrors means we have lost the property of reflection which would mean anything that wasn't a light source would not be visible. No more moon, and imagine the energy bills.

I wasn't trying to be THAT literal! But good thoughts, nonetheless...
